MAJ. GEN. AKINJOBI ASSUMES COMMAND AS 40TH GENERAL OFFICER COMMANDING 1 DIVISION

The newly appointed General Officer Commanding 1 Division Nigerian Army and Force Commander Operation Whirl Punch Maj Gen OT Akinjobi assumed command on Friday 14 April 2023, as the 40th General Officer Commanding 1 Division Nigerian Army.

In his Maiden remarks, Gen Akinjobi commended his predecessor, describing him as a qualified Infantry General, a seasoned fighter and one who has made the Nigerian Army proud in various theatres of operations across the country. In his words “I am very proud of you, indeed the Nigerian Army is proud of you,” He said as General Lagbaja reports to Army Headquarters as the Chief of Operations, the Division will be counting on him for numerous support.

Earlier in his remarks, the immediate past General Officer Commanding Maj Gen TA Lagbaja described the new GOC as a seasoned senior officer who fully understands the 1 Division Area of Responsibility and counts on him to succeed as GOC. He tasked all officers and soldiers of the Division to extend their support and cooperation to the new GOC. He thanked the Almighty God and the Chief of Army Staff for the privilege to serve in GOC 1 Division. He also appreciated formation commanders and all principal staff officers for their immense contribution to his successful tour of duty.

General Lagbaja equally thanked all officers and soldiers for their support, hard work, dedication and resilience. He charges them to give the same support to the new GOC

Highpoint of the events was signing of handing and taking over notes, presentation of Div flag to the new GOC Decoration of the Incoming GOC with 1 Division Insignia, presentation of souvenirs to the outgoing GOC, Group photograph, hoisting off a new Division’s flag and final inspection of quarter guard by the outgoing GOC.

Troops Of Op. Hadarin Daji Neutralized Bandits Recovered Arms And Ammunitions In Zamfara State

Today 6 June 2023, troops of Operation HADARIN DAJI conducted an ambush operation to bandits’ hideout at KUMBO village in BUKKUYUM Local Government Area of Zamfara State. During an encounter, troops made contact with bandits and a fierce firefight ensued during which Troops neutralized (4) four terrorists and recovered four (4) AK 47 rifles, two (2) AK 47 rifle magazines, twenty-six (26) rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunitions, and four (4) motorcycles amongst other sundry items.

ECOWAS stages a 3 day workshop on conflict resolve Support Programme for Africa in Lagos

ECOWAS: Workshop on Planning, Coordination, and Monitoring of the ECOWAS Support Programme to Africa Peace

The European Union’s (EU) support of the African Peace and Security Architecture Program provides a continental framework for the African Union Commission (AUC), Regional Economic Communities (RECs), and Regional Mechanisms (RMs) to jointly prevent, manage and resolve conflicts in Africa.

The Workshop on Planning, Coordination, and Monitoring of the ECOWAS Support Programme to Africa Peace & Security Architecture (APSA) IV was held from 31 to 02 June 2023, at Park in Hotel by Radisson in Victoria Island, Lagos-Nigeria.

The Objectives of this workshop were to check the progress of the implementation of the project (Planning, Achievements, Challenges, Opportunities) to review the planning of ECOWAS APSA IV 2023 activities and to complete the ECOWAS Monitoring and Evaluation Matrix, to reinforce the ownership of the project by the respective stakeholders, to enhance the coordination and the visibility of the project and To prepare the upcoming Joint Monitoring Mission (JMM).

During the opening ceremony, Mr. Dieudonne Nikiema, Manager of ECOWAS Peace Fund, welcomed the Permanent Representative of ECOWAS to the African Union, His Excellency Francis Oke, the Directors, and the participants from the Directorates present for the workshop.

While speaking, he noted that APSA is an important Programme for ECOWAS, which started in March 2020 and will end in February 2024.

He pointed out that it includes a series of activities involving all the ECOWAS Directorates present for the meeting and the ECOWAS Representative to the African Union. Mr. Nikiema.

However, while concluding his remarks, he indicated that the meeting should be allowed to have the level of achievement required and to see the gaps.

Also speaking, SEM Francis OKE who was the Chairman of the Meeting, in his opening remarks thanked all the participants present and declared that this meeting will allow to get a better understanding of APSA IV.

SEM. Francis OKE indicated that due to the results and activities ongoing, this project needs to be extended.

The meeting was attended by, the Permanent Representative of ECOWAS to the African Union, the Director of Humanitarian and Social Affairs of the ECOWAS Commission, the Manager of ECOWAS Peace Fund, the Director of Strategic Planning, M&E of ECOWAS Commission Representative of the Directorate of political affairs, representatives of ECOWAS Directorate of Peacekeeping and Regional Security, representatives of ECOWAS External Relations Directorate, Representatives of ECOWAS Directorate of Early Warning, representatives of ECOWAS Directorate of Procurement, representatives of ECOWAS Directorate of Financial Reporting and Grants.

NiMet Boss Re-elected As Member Of The WMO Executive Council

The Director General/ CEO Nigerian Meteorological Agency NiMet and Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the WMO, Professor Mansur Bako Matazu has been re elected into the Executive Council of the World Meteorological Organisation,WMO.

Professor Matazu, who has been a Member of the Executive Council since his assumption of office, was recognized for his dedication and commitment to the advancement of the science of meteorology and to humanity, and so was unanimously elected to represent Regional Association I (Africa) of WMO alongside Kenya, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Eswatini, South Africa, Egypt, Burkina Faso and Cote d’Ivoire.

Professor Matazu’s election, which is for a period of four years,was held during the 19th session of the WMO congress.

The World Meteorological Congress, is the highest decision-making body of the World Meteorological Organization, comprising 193 Members States and Territories referred to as Members.

During the congress, members go through various technical documents and take decisions to make our land, atmosphere, and water safe, including the Early Warning for All Initiative of the United Nations, which WMO leads.

As it is the tradition of the organisation to elect a new Secretary General at the ongoing Congress.
After going through several rounds of ballots, Argentina emerged as the President of the organisation replacing Germany whose tenure elapses after the Congress.

In similar vein, United Arab Emirates, Ivory Coast, Ireland and India emerged as the First, Second and Third Vice Presidents respectively.
Other Members so elected to the Executive Council representing the remaining 5 Regional Associations of the WMO are China, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Republic of Korea, United Arab Emirates, India, Peru, Guyana, Brazil, Argentina, Canada, United States of America, British Caribbean, Curacao & St. Maarten, Jamaica, Australia, Singapore, Indonesia, Tonga, United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, Romania, Czech Republic, Norway, Italy, Turkey, and France
The next financial year of the WMO begins from January 2024 when the tenure of the current WMO Secretary General would have expired
